What goes on a salary slip?

A practical guide to the details, numbers, and sections of a clear payslip.

Start with the people and the period

A salary slip connects an employer, an employee, and a specific pay period. Include a company name, employee name or internal ID, period start and end, payment date, and currency. Keep unnecessary personal identifiers out of the document.

Separate the numbers

Gross earnings are basic pay plus wage allowances, bonuses, and other earnings. Employee deductions reduce net wages. Reimbursements sit outside wage gross and increase cash payable. Employer contributions should be shown separately: they do not reduce employee net pay.

A worked example

A fictional employee earns USD 4,800 basic pay and USD 800 in allowances. Gross earnings are USD 5,600. Manual deductions of USD 500 leave net wages of USD 5,100. If USD 75 of expenses are reimbursed, cash payable becomes USD 5,175. No statutory tax rate is assumed in this example.

Check before sharing

Review names, dates, amounts, and authorization before issuing a document. A formatting preset does not establish legal compliance. The employer must check applicable local payslip and recordkeeping requirements.
